Royal Selangor Yacht Club
Founded in 1969 on the banks of Sungai Klang and granted its royal title in 1989, Royal Selangor Yacht Club is one of Malaysia's oldest marine institutions.
The club hosts a fleet of over 100 vessels and organises the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, the second-oldest regatta in Asia, run in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club.
Problem
RSYC required a set of inflatable course markers for the 35th Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta - a nine-day passage race covering over 300 miles up the west coast, starting at Port Klang and racing through Pangkor, Penang and Langkawi.
That itinerary set the specification. Standard advertising inflatables are built for a single fixed location and a short deployment: a padang, an atrium, a few days, then storage. These markers had to be deployed, recovered, packed and redeployed across four ports in nine days, in open water, under direct equatorial sun.
The club also had a branding requirement that ruled out a straightforward printed set. Markers needed to carry RSYC's own identity while allowing sponsor branding to be added for individual editions, without commissioning replacements each year.
Solutions
Wonder Balloons fabricated 15 inflatable buoys from scratch, ranging from one to three feet, in several shapes for different course positions.
Material and seam construction were specified apart from our advertising inflatable range. Marine use demanded a build able to tolerate sustained water contact and prolonged UV exposure in tropical heat - conditions that degrade standard event-grade inflatables within a single season.
Because the set travels the full length of the regatta, the buoys were built for repeated deflation, packing and reinflation without seam or valve fatigue.
Result
The set completed the full nine-day, four-port 35th edition in November 2025 and has been recommissioned by the club for the 36th, running November 2026 - a second season on the same route.
