Air Asia
AirAsia is one of Asia's largest low-cost carriers, operating across ASEAN and beyond from its Kuala Lumpur headquarters. Its Free Seats campaign is among the airline's most recognised annual promotions, launched simultaneously across multiple national markets.
Problem
AirAsia HQ needed a launch centrepiece for its Free Seats campaign - a physical object that would signal the campaign instantly and give each market a reveal moment worth photographing.
The brief carried two hard constraints. First, the replica had to satisfy the airline's own design team: upholstery colour, logo placement, proportions and headrest form all checked against the real cabin seat, through a sampling and approval round before production.
Second, and harder - the eight units were destined for launch events in eight ASEAN markets, one per market, set up by local teams in each country. Wonder Balloons would be present for the Kuala Lumpur launch only.
Everything shipped had to be assembled correctly by people we would never meet, in venues we would never see, on a date that could not move. And the full run had to be produced and dispatched in two weeks.
Solutions
Wonder Balloons designed and fabricated eight giant inflatable replicas of the AirAsia cabin seat, at 8ft and 15ft heights, built on continuous blower systems for stable display in crowded launch venues.
Colour, branding and proportion were matched to the client's specification and signed off at sampling stage before production ran.
Because most units would be deployed without us, each shipment was prepared as a complete, self-contained kit - the inflatable, its blower system, and a fitted reveal cloth sized to the unit, so local teams in each market could stage the same reveal moment without on-site guidance from us.
The full run of eight was produced and shipped to all eight markets within two weeks of brief. Our team installed and operated the Kuala Lumpur launch directly; the remaining seven were deployed by AirAsia's local teams from the kits we supplied.
Result
AirAsia has since commissioned Wonder Balloons for further major campaigns, and we continue to work with the airline's appointed event agencies on smaller activations.
